Subscribing
Sign in to the developer portal, open Billing, pick a product and plan, and pay at a secure checkout run by Stripe. The subscription is sold through Link, Stripe's checkout service, which is the seller of record: the invoice comes from Link, and Link calculates and collects any tax. You can pay by card, by card wallet (such as Apple Pay or Google Pay), with Link or, in some countries, with a local payment method offered at checkout. Payment details are entered on the checkout page only and never reach Enigma Vault. Invoices and receipts arrive by email, and the Manage billing button in the portal opens your billing page to update the payment method, download invoices or cancel.
You get a client ID and client secret for the product, shown on the portal dashboard within a minute of subscribing.
Link calculates tax at checkout from your billing address where it applies. Card Vault and Data Vault requests beyond the allowance are billed at the end of each month. Automatic upgrades at the stored-token or storage limits take effect at once, prorated. File Vault storage beyond the Business allowance is billed per GB-month: the average of the daily stored-GB readings over the month, less the allowance, in whole GB.
Annual billing. Starter, Growth and Business can also be paid yearly in the developer portal: $550 a year for Starter, $2,700 for Growth and $5,500 for Business, per product. The year is charged at checkout and renews every year until you cancel. Allowances stay monthly and overage is still invoiced monthly at the plan's rate, so an annual subscription receives one overage invoice a month (usually $0) besides the yearly invoice. Lite is monthly only.
What counts as a request
Every authenticated call to the product's API counts towards the allowance of the client ID that made it, whichever endpoint it hits. Allowances are per subscription: if several client IDs belong to one subscription, their requests are pooled. Allowances reset at the start of each billing period and unused requests do not carry over.
Billing periods and overage
A subscription bought in the developer portal renews monthly on the day you subscribed, or yearly with annual billing. The plan price is charged at the start of each period (each year, on an annual plan). On an annual plan the allowance and overage still run month by month from the day you subscribed, and the Billing page shows the paid-through date and the date of the next overage invoice. Overage used during a period is charged on the invoice issued at the end of that period, at the rate of the plan that was in effect. Usage is metered hourly, so the last hour of a period can appear on the following invoice.
Lite in the developer portal has no overage charge and needs no card. When a Lite subscription reaches 80% of its allowance, and again at 100%, the portal and an email suggest a paid plan for production traffic.
Changing plans
For a subscription bought in the developer portal, choose a new plan under Change plan in the portal. On a monthly subscription the change takes effect at the next renewal with no proration: the current period stays on the current plan, and its overage is billed at the current rate. Choosing your current plan again before the renewal cancels a pending change. On an annual subscription, a higher plan takes effect within the hour, with a prorated charge for the rest of the annual term (the new annual price less the unused part of the fee already paid) and an email stating the amount; a lower plan, or a switch to monthly billing, takes effect at the annual renewal. A switch from monthly to annual billing takes effect at the next monthly renewal, when the first year is charged. Automatic upgrades at the stored-token or storage limits work the same way on annual plans, at the next plan's annual price.
Cancelling
Subscriptions bought in the developer portal are cancelled from Manage billing in the portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period (on an annual plan, the end of the paid year, whether you cancel from Manage billing or from your Link account): you keep access until then, the client ID is deactivated when the period ends, and overage used in the final month is billed on the final invoice. Annual fees already paid are not refunded, except where the law requires it.
Subscribed through AWS Marketplace? Plan changes and cancellation for those subscriptions are made in the AWS console.
Failed payments
If a payment for a subscription bought in the developer portal fails you receive an email from Enigma Vault and from the payment processor, and the payment is retried over the following three weeks. Service continues during the retries. If every retry fails the subscription is cancelled and the client ID deactivated. Paying the open invoice, or adding a working card in Manage billing, settles it.
Plan limits and API responses
On subscriptions bought in the developer portal, the Lite plan stops at its limits instead of billing more, and some features need a higher plan. The limits apply on every API version. When a request is refused, the API answers with a JSON body that names the limit, your plan, the plan that removes it (requiredPlan) and the portal's Billing page (upgrade).
| Response | error | When |
| 429 | allowance_exhausted | A Lite subscription has used its monthly request allowance. The limit is enforced hourly, so a few requests past the allowance may still be served. Requests resume when the billing period resets (resets in the body, and a Retry-After header), or upgrade to Starter. Hosted forms already open keep working. |
| 409 | token_limit_reached | Card Vault Lite stores up to 100 cards and Data Vault Lite up to 100 data tokens at a time (tokenType card or data). Cards and tokens past their ttl, and deleted ones, do not count. A Data Vault batch that would go past the limit is refused whole; values that match an existing deterministic token do not count. Upgrade to Starter for more. |
| 409 | storage_limit_reached | File Vault Lite stores up to 5 GB. New upload URLs are refused until stored files are deleted (the figure is refreshed hourly) or the subscription moves to Starter. |
| 400 | feature_not_in_plan | Custom CSS on hosted forms (feature custom_css) and Data Vault batches over 500 plaintexts (batch_size) need Growth or Business. Twilio Pay capture also needs Growth or Business and is refused in Twilio's response format. |
In the portal itself, the raw usage export on the Usage page (every request for up to 60 days, or the File Vault storage report, emailed as a download link) is included on Business. The daily CSV stays available on every plan.
